Propane Safety Tips

Propane gas is a safe and environmentally friendly resource. By knowing and following a few simple rules, you should not experience any problems with your propane service

Rules:

1.Know the smell of propane gas, if you don't, call Douglass Distributing. We will be happy to send you a scratch and sniff card that has the propane gas warning odor.

2.Always be sensitive to the slightest gas odor. Any sort of a gas odor may signal a serious propane gas leak.

3.Before lighting a propane gas appliance, sniff around the area at floor level, as propane is heavier than air. If you smell gas, don't light the appliance.

4.Repeated pilot light outages could indicate a hazardous condition. Don't ignore this warning sign, call a trained LP-Gas service technician to check the problem.

5.Keep combustible products like gasoline, kerosene or cleaners in a separate room from propane appliances. Your appliance pilot lights could ignite fumes from these combustibles.

6.Don't operate any gas appliance without reading the operating instructions carefully.

If you smell gas in your house, RV, workplace or around any gas equipment, TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION!

1.Put out any smoking materials and other open flames.

2.Do not operate electric switches, light matches, or use your phone. Any spark in the area where propane gas is present may ignite the gas. This could include the spark in a light switch, telephone, appliance motor, and even static electricity from walking across a room.

3.Get everyone out of the building, vehicle, trailer or area. DO THIS IMMEDIATELY!

4.Close all gas tank or cylinder supply valves. (see diagrams below)

5.Use your neighbor's phone to call a trained LP-Gas service person and the fire department. Even though you may not continue to smell gas, do not turn on the gas again. Do not re-enter the building, vehicle, trailer or area.

6.Let the service person and firefighters check for escaped gas. Have them air out the area before you return to it.

7.Have properly trained LP-Gas service people repair the leak, then check and re-light all of your gas appliances for you.
